START WITH THE BASICS
What Is Shilajit?
Everything you need to know about shilajit resin, mumijo, fulvic acid, and where it comes from.
Shilajit is a natural, tar-like resin that forms over centuries from slowly decomposed plant material trapped between layers of rock in high-altitude mountain ranges. It is composed mainly of humic substances (fulvic acid and humic acid) and contains a broad spectrum of minerals and trace elements. Shilajit has a long history of traditional use in Central Asia and the Himalayan region and is sold in Europe as a food supplement.
Shilajit consists mainly of humic substances: fulvic acid and humic acid. Vitadote® Shilajit Resin contains 76–83% fulvic acid and 7–12% humic acid, plus minerals and trace elements such as iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, manganese and potassium. The exact composition of shilajit varies by origin and batch, which is why every Vitadote® batch is analysed in an independent laboratory.
Shilajit is collected from rock crevices in high-altitude mountain ranges, typically between 4,500 and 6,500 metres. Well-known sources are the Himalayas, the Altai Mountains and the Caucasus. Vitadote® Shilajit Resin is sourced from the Himalayan and Altai mountain ranges; Vitadote® Shilajit Tablets are made from Altai shilajit from Kazakhstan.
Yes. Shilajit and mumijo (also spelled mumie, mumiyo or mumio) are two names for the same natural resin. "Shilajit" is the Sanskrit name used in the Ayurvedic tradition, while "mumijo" is the name used in Russian, Central Asian and European traditions.
No. Fulvic acid is the main component of shilajit, but shilajit is a complete natural resin that also contains humic acid, minerals and trace elements. A fulvic acid supplement is usually an isolated or synthetic extract; shilajit resin is the whole, minimally processed substance.
Shilajit resin has a distinct bitter, earthy taste with a slightly smoky note. Some people compare it to very strong black coffee. Dissolving a pea-sized portion in warm water, herbal tea or warm milk makes the taste milder. Vitadote® Shilajit Tablets are an alternative if you prefer not to taste the resin at all.
DOSAGE & USAGE
How to Take Shilajit
Recommended dosage, best time to take shilajit, and how to dissolve shilajit resin.
Follow the dosage on the packaging. For Vitadote® Shilajit Resin this is a pea-sized portion of 300–500 mg once or twice daily. For Vitadote® Shilajit Tablets it is 2 tablets (400 mg) twice daily, with a maximum of 4 tablets (800 mg) per day. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake. A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
Most people take shilajit in the morning, 30–60 minutes before a meal. If you take it twice a day, the second portion can be taken before another meal later in the day. There is no fixed rule: choose a moment you can keep up consistently.
Take a pea-sized portion (300–500 mg) with the measuring spoon or a clean, dry spoon and dissolve it in lukewarm water, herbal tea or warm milk (below 39°C / 102°F). Stir until the resin has dissolved completely and the liquid turns golden to dark brown, then drink. You can also let the resin dissolve under the tongue.
Yes. Dissolving shilajit in warm (not boiling) milk is one of the traditional ways to take it and makes the taste milder. Use milk below 39°C / 102°F so the resin dissolves properly.
A 30 g jar of Vitadote® Shilajit Resin contains around 100 portions of 300 mg, which is roughly 3 months at one portion per day or 6–7 weeks at two portions per day. The 60 g and 90 g packs contain two and three 30 g jars. One pack of Vitadote® Shilajit Tablets (120 tablets) lasts 30 days at 4 tablets per day.
Yes, shilajit is intended for daily use at the recommended dosage. Some users prefer to take a short break after a few months; this is a personal choice, not a requirement. Always follow the dosage on the packaging and do not exceed the recommended daily intake.
COMPOSITION & RESEARCH
What Is in Shilajit?
Fulvic acid, humic acid, minerals, and why we only communicate verifiable facts.
The fulvic acid content of shilajit varies widely by origin and processing. Vitadote® Shilajit Resin contains 76–83% fulvic acid and 7–12% humic acid, verified by independent laboratory analysis. When comparing products, look for a certificate of analysis that states the measured fulvic acid content rather than a marketing percentage.
Vitadote® Shilajit Resin contains, among others, calcium (4%), iron (6%), magnesium (3%), zinc (3%), manganese (3%), selenium (1%) and potassium (1%) per serving, alongside fulvic acid and humic acid. Shilajit is often described as containing more than 85 minerals and trace elements in small amounts; the exact profile depends on the source.
Shilajit has been studied in laboratory, animal and a limited number of small human studies, mostly on its composition and safety. In the European Union, no health claims for shilajit or fulvic acid have been authorised by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). That is why we do not make claims about effects on the body: we describe what the product is, what it contains and how to use it, and leave the interpretation of research to you and your healthcare professional.
Under EU and Dutch rules (Regulation (EC) 1924/2006 and the KOAG/KAG code), food supplements may only carry health claims that have been authorised by EFSA. No such claims exist for shilajit. Vitadote® therefore only communicates verifiable facts: origin, composition, laboratory testing, HACCP production and usage instructions. Our product texts have KOAG/KAG approval and are checked by the NVWA.
WHO CAN TAKE SHILAJIT
Is Shilajit Suitable for Me?
Men, women, athletes, vegans, and when not to take shilajit.
Yes. Vitadote® Shilajit is a food supplement for adults and is taken by both men and women at the same recommended dosage. It is not suitable for children.
We advise against it. There is not enough research on the use of shilajit during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Consult your doctor or midwife before taking any food supplement while pregnant or nursing.
Yes. Shilajit is a natural food supplement that contains no added stimulants, hormones or synthetic ingredients. Athletes who are subject to doping controls should, as with any supplement, check with their federation or a sports physician before use.
Yes. Vitadote® Shilajit Resin consists of 100% pure shilajit resin with no additives, and Vitadote® Shilajit Tablets contain pure shilajit resin standardised to contain fulvic acid. Both are free from animal ingredients, gluten and GMOs.
SAFETY & SIDE EFFECTS
Is Shilajit Safe?
Side effects, medication, heavy metal testing, and who should not take shilajit.
Purified, laboratory-tested shilajit taken at the recommended dosage is considered safe for healthy adults. Only use purified shilajit: raw, unprocessed shilajit can contain contaminants such as heavy metals. Every batch of Vitadote® Shilajit is tested in an independent laboratory for purity and heavy metal content, and the product is checked by the NVWA.
At the recommended dosage side effects are uncommon. Some people notice mild digestive discomfort when they first start. If you experience any adverse reaction, stop taking the product and consult your healthcare professional. People with haemochromatosis (iron overload), sickle cell anaemia, thalassaemia or gout should not take shilajit because of its iron content, unless a doctor advises otherwise.
Possibly. As with any food supplement, consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking shilajit if you use medication, in particular medication for diabetes, blood pressure or thyroid conditions, or if you take iron supplements. Do not combine shilajit with medication without medical advice.
Raw, unpurified shilajit can contain heavy metals such as lead, mercury and arsenic, which is why purification and testing are essential. Vitadote® Shilajit is tested per batch in an independent laboratory for heavy metal content. A certificate of analysis is available on request.
Do not take shilajit if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, or have a condition involving iron overload (haemochromatosis, sickle cell anaemia, thalassaemia) or gout. If you have a kidney condition, a history of kidney stones or any other medical condition, consult your doctor first. Keep out of reach of young children.
BUYING GUIDE
Choosing Quality Shilajit
How to identify real shilajit, resin vs tablets, storage tips, and where to buy in Europe.
Some simple checks: pure shilajit resin dissolves completely in warm water within a few minutes and leaves no gritty residue; it softens and becomes sticky when warmed in your hands; it does not burn with a flame but bubbles and expands; and it has a bitter, earthy taste and smoky smell. The most reliable check is a recent certificate of analysis from an independent laboratory, which we can provide on request.
Resin is the whole, minimally processed form of shilajit: you measure a pea-sized portion and dissolve it in a warm drink. Tablets contain shilajit resin standardised to contain fulvic acid in a fixed dose of 200 mg per tablet, so no measuring is needed and there is no taste. Which one you choose is a matter of preference and convenience.
Shilajit resin keeps for years when stored correctly. Keep the jar closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and always use a clean, dry spoon so no moisture gets in. See the best-before date on the packaging. Refrigeration is not necessary but makes the resin firmer and easier to portion.

SUPPLEMENT COMBINATIONS
Taking Shilajit with Other Supplements
Can you combine shilajit with ashwagandha, creatine, coffee, or other supplements?
There are no known interactions between shilajit and ashwagandha, and many people use both. Keep to the recommended dosage of each product. If you use medication or have a medical condition, consult your healthcare professional before combining supplements.
There are no known interactions between shilajit and creatine. Both can be taken on the same day; keep to the recommended dosage of each product and drink enough water.
Yes. Shilajit resin dissolves well in warm coffee, as long as the coffee is not too hot (below 39°C / 102°F is ideal for dissolving; you can also dissolve the resin in a little warm water first and add it to your coffee).
Shilajit can generally be combined with common supplements such as multivitamins, omega-3 and vitamin D. Because shilajit contains iron, do not combine it with iron supplements without medical advice. Be cautious with supplements or medication that affect blood sugar or blood pressure, and consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt.
